I can't count the number of times I've heard a speech at a reception or event start out with "For those of you that don't know me..." Here are some alternatives to make your speech stand out and get their attention.
💡 Personal & Heartfelt Openers
"I’ve been waiting for this day almost as much as the couple has…"(Then tell a short personal story or moment that built anticipation.)
"If love were a playlist, today would be the greatest hit."(Great if you're a DJ, music fan, or tying into a themed event.)
"I knew today would be special the moment I saw the groom cry during the processional… and it hasn’t let up since."
"Let me take you back to the moment I realized these two were meant to be…"(Launch into a quick, charming story.)
🎭 Funny & Lighthearted
"I’ve been asked to say a few words… they just didn’t say they had to be good ones."
"When I first found out I was speaking today, I did what anyone would do—I Googled ‘how to give a wedding speech without crying or embarrassing yourself.’ Wish me luck."
"My name is [Your Name], and I’m here to confirm that yes, this is the best wedding food I’ve ever had."
🧠 Unusual & Clever
"Let’s play a quick game. Raise your hand if you’ve known the bride longer than I have…"(Fun and interactive—bonus if you tie it into your relationship with the couple.)
"Statistically speaking, someone here is going to embarrass themselves tonight. I figured I’d go ahead and get it over with."
"They say public speaking is people’s #1 fear… but I love these two more than I fear you all."
🎤 Theatrical or Themed
(In mock-serious tone) “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today… not to relive a Prince song, but to celebrate love.”(Great for a music-themed or laid-back crowd.)
"Tonight, we’re not just witnessing a wedding—we’re part of a love story that’s still being written."
"Think of this speech like a good toast: short, a little bubbly, and best enjoyed with a drink in hand."
